Winter and Towing Checks

For a car's winter and towing checks, we focus on fluid levels, tyres, lights, wipers, and the battery. For towing, specifically check the trailer's lights, brakes, and mudguards, we ensure the car and trailer are within weight limits. A winter kit and extra supplies are essential for both, especially when towing in severe weather.

  • Fluids:
Check and top up coolant, oil, and windscreen washer fluid, using a winter-grade solution for the washer fluid to prevent freezing.

  • Tyres:
Ensure all tyres have the correct pressure and adequate tread depth (at least 1.6mm legally, with 2-3mm recommended).

  • Lights:
Verify that all lights—headlights, brake lights, indicators, and fog lights—are working correctly and are clean.

  • Wipers:
Check that wipers are in good condition and replace blades if they are worn or streaky.

  • Battery:
Have your battery checked, as winter conditions can make them fail. Cold weather is a leading cause of breakdowns.

  • Heater and defroster:
Ensure the defroster and heater are working properly to keep the windscreen clear.

  • Winter kit:
Keep a kit in your car with essentials like a blanket, torch, first-aid kit, high-visibility jacket, snacks, and water.

Towing checks
  • Trailer lights and brakes:
Check all trailer lights and indicators are functioning, and that the brakes are in good order.

  • Tires and wheels:
Confirm the trailer's tyre pressure and tread are correct. Check that the wheel nuts and bolts are tightened to the correct torque.

  • Mudguards:
Ensure mudguards are fitted securely to the trailer.

  • Weight limits:
Do not exceed the maximum technically permissible laden mass (MTPLM) for the trailer. This can cause instability.

  • Bowden cables:
For caravans, consider hanging the middle of your Bowden cables high to prevent water from freezing inside them
